Orange Harvest Moon with orange clouds

This October is full of lunar energy! There are two full moons this month and the 2nd Full moon in October is quite unique! The energy is buzzing and there are a lot of events to look forward to. The first full moon in early October this year is the Harvest Moon. In October, the full moon names depend on when the autumn equinox occurs. The moon closest to the autumn equinox is called the Harvest Moon. Usually the September moon is the Harvest moon, but about every 3  years the first moon in October is the Harvest Moon. This year the Harvest Moon falls on October 1st. The second full moon this month is also special. It is known as a Blue Moon, and it also falls on Halloween! There is triple the energy in our mists.

The October full moon names are historically linked to autumn, farming and hunting. The October Harvest Moon gets its name from the period after the autumn equinox. The moon rises earlier than most nights, providing more light from the moon to allow farmers and hunters to work later in the day.  When the full moon is the Harvest Moon, it is also called the “Wine Moon,” and “Singing Moon.” The full moon in October also goes by the “Hunter Moon” when the September Moon is the Harvest Moon. This name originates from the hunting that occurs after the harvest season. People needed to prepare for the winter, and this included stocking up on meat. Other names for this moon include, “Travel Moon,” “ Dying Grass Moon,”  or “Blood Moon.” The names may change depending on the date of the autumn equinox, but are connected to the growth, harvest and hunting cycles of past communities.

The Norse considered the Harvest Moon the most powerful moon of the year. With two full moons this month, the energy is intense. The Harvest Moon in early October falls on the sign of Aries. Aries energy is full of passion, assertiveness, confidence  and independence. This energy will help us prioritize our personal goals and get sh*t done! It will feel like we have more energy, direction, and power. This Aries energy will also help us live fearlessly. This intense energy will also cause us to take things a little more personal than usual. We have to step aside and take a breather and try not to let our temper get the best of us. We also want to be careful, as we don’t want to push people to only serve our needs. We have to strike a balance from our needs and those of others, otherwise we might feel the consequences later down the line.

With the Harvest season in full swing we have seen so much growth, but also the accumulation of personal baggage. Now is a great time to take stock of our emotions and well-being. Help yourself come to terms with your actions and feelings. In the process forgive yourselves, learn from your experiences and let go of the past. This will help us clear ourselves from the past that haunts us and prepare for the future. There is great potential for healing and connecting to the energy of our ancestors.

From our relationships with others and sorting through our personal life, this month is all about bringing balance back into our lives and preparing for the next steps forward. The Harvest moon represents the culmination of all the hard work put forth this past year. It is a time to cultivate gratitude and share our blessings with others.  We have seen growth and await new beginnings in the next cycle.
